WHAT IS ‘CHALLENGE BY CHOICE?’
Each individual climber is allowed to set his or her own goals without interference from facilitators or peer pressure from other climbers, while going into that slightly uncomfortable zone somewhere between safety and panic, where the greatest opportunity exists for learning and personal growth.
It involves a chance to try a potentially difficult or frightening challenge in an atmosphere of support and caring; the opportunity to "back off" when performance pressures or self-doubt become too strong, knowing that an opportunity for a future attempt will always be available; a chance to try difficult tasks while recognizing that the attempt or effort is more important than the actual result or final performance; and respect by everyone in the group for individual ideas and choices.
